आख्याहि मे को भवानुग्ररूपोनमोऽस्तु ते देववर प्रसीद ।
विज्ञातुमिच्छामि भवन्तमाद्यंन हि प्रजानामि तव प्रवृत्तिम् ॥
Transliteration
ākhyāhi me ko bhavān-ugra-rūpo namo’stu te deva-vara prasīda |
vijñātum icchāmi bhavantam-ādyaṃ na hi prajānāmi tava pravṛttim || 31 ||
Translation
O Fearsome One! Tell me who You are ! Salutations to You, O Supreme God. Be gracious, I desire to know You, the Original One. I do not comprehend Your activity.
Purport
In normal times, death of a single human is terrifying for any human, but Arjuna witnessed the destruction of the whole world, all living has seen at one place in the universal form of Bhagwan Shri Krishna. Thousands of blazing mouths appear in Shri Krishna’s universal form, consuming the whole world, all living beings like a lion eat its prey.
Its an extremely terrifying scene for Arjuna. He got deeply confused. In his life, he knew Shri Krishna is a divine being and that is why he was Shri Krishna’s disciple. During the conversation, he also came to know its Shri Krishna who is the supreme God, the creator, and the maintainer of all beings. He also knew he alone is also the destroyer of the world, but could not understand how to comprehend what he sees. What phenomena or entity of the world which is consuming all living beings and all celestial planets and stars mercilessly.
Arjuna asks Krishna to reveal what this form means.
