Ch 02 : Sh 47

कर्मण्येवाधिकारस्ते मा फलेषु कदाचन ।
मा कर्मफलहेतुर्भुर्मा ते संगोऽस्त्वकर्मणि ॥

Transliteration

karmany evadhikaras te ma phalesu kadacana
ma karma-phala-hetur bhur ma te sango 'stv akarmani

Translation

You have control over performing your action (right to do action/duty) and not over the results. Never consider yourself to be the cause of the results of your activities, and never be inclined toward not doing your duty.

Purport

The following shloka is one of the most famous and know shlokas of Shrimad Bhagvad Gita. This Shloka explains the foundation principle of Karmya Yoga. Describing the secrete Bhagvan Shri Krishna explained following point regarding Karma

1. Human has control over actions and never upon the results.
2. Human should never consider himself as the cause of the result. This implies from first principle as given above, since human has no control over results, he can’t consider himself as the cause of the same. The same is also discussed later in ch3 and ch5 where Bhagvan explains how prakriti is the real doer of material activities.
3. One should not try to inclined towards not doing karma. This again is explained in Ch3:Sh4-5. No living being can remain even for a moment without not doing anything hence no doing karma is not an option at all.
