न च सन्न्यसनादेव सिद्धिं समधिगच्छति ॥

Transliteration

na karmanam anarambhan naiskarmyam puruso 'snute
na ca sannyasanad eva siddhim samadhigacchati

Translation

Not by merely abstaining from work can one achieve freedom from reaction, nor by renunciation alone can one attain perfection.

Purport

When Arjuna got confused about which path is better, The path of knowledge or path of Karma, Bhagvan first explained Arjuna about the twofold path of enlightenment and Moksha.

In this Shloka Bhagvan Shri Krishna explains the significance of karma. Bhagvan said nothing in this world is possible without karma. The knowledge, the Bhakti, The sanayas, etc are all different kinds of karma only.

Anybody who thinks that he will abstain from karma and so would be free from the reaction of karma or some other who thinks he will renounce the karma to achieve enlightenment is wrong.

In fact, one can be freed from the bonds of Karma or can achieve enlightenment only trough performing appropriate Karma only.
