Chapter 4 : Jnana Yoga - The Yoga of knowledge

Ch 04 : Sh 28

द्रव्ययज्ञास्तपोयज्ञा योगयज्ञास्तथापरे ।
स्वाध्यायज्ञानयज्ञाश्च यतयः संशितव्रताः ॥

Transliteration

dravya yajñās-tapo yajñā yoga yajñās-tathā’pare |
svādhyāya-jñāna yajñāśca yatayaḥ saṃśita vratāḥ || 28 ||

Translation

Others again offer material objects, Tapas and Yoga as sacrifice, while others being self restrained and of rigid vows offer their scriptural study and knowledge as sacrifice

Purport

The above Shloka defines 4 types of Yajnas. The process of Tap Yajna has also been defined in earlier shloka(#26)

The four types of Yajna as mentioned above can be understood in the following way:
1. Dravya Yajna:
In other words, this is the charity and service. Offering money, material objects to those who need is one of the highest karmas and is called as the Drvaya Yajna.

2. Tap Yajna:
As described earlier to renounce those action which binds to material world and fruits of the action by establishing complete control over senses is called as Tap Yajna.

3. Yoga Yajna:
To practice Ashtanga Yoga to achieve the physical, mental and spiritual purity is called Yoga yajna.

4. Jnana Yajna:
To engage in the study to find out the truth for self-enlightenment and to acquire skills for the welfare of humankind is called Jnana Yajna.
