Chapter 6 : Raj Yoga or Dhyana Yoga - Yoga of Meditation

Ch 06 : Sh 29

सर्वभूतस्थमात्मानं सर्वभूतानि चात्मनि ।
ईक्षते योगयुक्तात्मा सर्वत्र समदर्शनः ॥

Transliteration

sarva-bhūtastham ātmānaṃ sarva-bhūtāni cātmani |
īkṣate yoga-yuktātmā sarvatra sama-darśanaḥ || 29 ||

Translation

With the mind harmonized by Yoga one sees equality everywhere; one sees one’s Self as abiding in all beings and all beings in one’s own Self.

Alternate interpretation

A true yogī observes Me in all beings, and also sees every being in Me. Indeed, the self-realized man sees Me everywhere.

Purport

There are two different interpretations of above Shloka, but no matter which of the interpretation been taken it finally gives the same meaning, and that is that a realized yogi sees every living being with equality.

Taking the first interpretation, when a yogi attains the perfection in [Ashtanga] yoga he is united with the supreme Bramahn, in such a state he does not see any difference between himself and other living beings as he is able to see the souls.

As per the second interpretations, a realized Yogi sees the same Bramhan(ब्रह्म), the power of Bhagvan Shri Krishna present in every living being and does not see any difference.

Taking either of the above interpretation, it finally concludes that an enlightened person sees every living soul as equal, for him there does not exist any difference among different living beings.

To remind the readers that the same state of equanimity been described in chapter 5, through knowledge, the Janana Yoga. This also gives a further conclusion that no which path of yoga human chooses he achieves the same final destination, that is the unification of Atma with Parmatma. This fact is further described specifically,

“That state which is attained by the Sankhyans [Sankhya Yogis], is also attained by the Yogins, [Karma Yogis]. He alone is wise who sees that the Sankhya and yoga are really one. (Ch5: Sh5)”
