But verily the reward gained by these persons of limited understanding is finite. The worshippers of the deities will go to the deities but My devotees will come to Me.

Purport

In earlier Shlokas, Bhagvan Shri Krishna explained people possess different worldly necessities and desires. For that reason, they worship deities which can help fulfill those desires.

But worldly things are not permanent and going to end sooner or later. Therefore worshipping God or deities only for worldly things is not the best option. In this shloka, Bhagvan Shri Krishna reiterates the same fact.

One has to note, this Shloka is one of the most misunderstood and misquoted. Anti Hindu forces misquote this Shloka to target Hindu worship methods. Many Hindus too take this Shloka to interpret worshipping deities is wrong.

This Shloka nowhere says worshipping deities as wrong. In fact in Ch3(Sh10,11) it is very clearly declared that deities are the immediate guardian of Human who nurtures human for physical needs.

Having physical desires is not right and wrong automatically until it is established that it is selfish and harming the interest of other beings. But this is a universal truth that all worldly materials are temporary and going to end sooner or later. Those people who worship God for physical desire will indeed get the fruits, but those fruits since are physical in nature hence will be temporary.

This Shloka gives another fact. Every devotee reaches the abode of his Ishta devata, whom he worships. If one worships Indra, Varuna or such deities he will go to deva Loka. Those devotees who worship Shri Krishna will go to the abode of Shri Krishna.
