Know that all those states of Sattva, Rajas and Tamas have their origin in Me alone. But I am not in them; they are in Me.

Purport

In this shloka, Bhagvan Shri Krishna explained the secret of the universe pertaining to the three modes and nature and the relation between Shri Krishna, the God, and material universe.

Bhagvan declared with absolute clarity that three modes which invariably the source of all characteristics of universal activities are generated from Him alone. Everything in this universe hence is directly dependent upon Shri Krishna. But the opposite is not true. God is not dependent upon the modes of nature. Hence any change in this universe does not affect God. He is independent and above material world and modes of nature
